Verizon Wireless is the second-largest wireless telecommunication network in the United States. In April 2006, Verizon Wireless served a total of 53 million customers and has the largest service by area. Head Quartered in Bedminster, New Jersey, the company is a joint venture of Verizon Communication. Verizon Wireless traces its roots to Bell Atlantic mobile and NYNEX mobile communication merged in 1995 to create Bell Atlantic and this wireless subsidiary was renamed Bell Atlantic Mobile. In jun 1999, AirTouch communications of San Francisco, California merged with U.K-based Vodaone Group .
This wireless joint venture received regulatory approval in six months, it has began operations as Verizon wireless in April 4. The name Verzon, a portmanteau, is derived by combining the word veritas, a Latin term that means truth. Verizon Wireless is one of two U.S national carries to use CDMA Technology, Verizon also uses an overlayed Amps network.
