Sprint was name chosen by a contest sponsered with a company by name Rex Hollies, the VP of Marketing at that time, which headquarted in Burlingame, California. Sprint merged with US Telecom (the longest distance arm of United Telecom) to form US Sprint, this partnership was owned by GTE and United Telecom. United Telecom purchased controlling intrest in US Sprint in 1989, next in 1991 United Telecom completed its acquisition of US Sprint then in same year it was changed to Sprint.
Sprint aquried Central in 1993, which allowed Sprint to provide local service in a total of 18 states, its main era started in 1995 , began to offer wireless service under the Sprint PCS brand, then in October5, 1999 Sprint with MCI WorldCom annnounced a $129 Billion dollar merger agreement between the two companies, this stood as a recored at that time, however this did not go through because of pressure from the United States Depatment of Justice and the European Union on concerns of it creating a monopoly.
In 2003, they have began recombining their local telecom, long distance, wireline, and wireless business units into a new company, marketing the combined company as "One Sprint". In 2004 April, the separtely-traded wireless tracking stock, "PCS" was absorbed into the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), "FON" ticker symbol, Sprint former ticker symbol. It is one of the largest telecommincation companies in the world, with a combined market capitalization of $77.1 Billion in early 2006.
